Most Mauritius articles read like a brochure — turquoise lagoon, palm tree, “paradise on earth,” book now. That is not much help when you are deciding between Belle Mare and Flic en Flac, or whether August is a good month.
This guide does something different. It tells you which coast suits which traveller — including the drawbacks of each — what is genuinely worth doing with and without children, and which months to avoid.
| Visa | Visa-free on arrival for Indian passport holders · up to 90 days · no fee |
| Flight time | About 7 hours 45 minutes direct from Delhi. Direct services also from Mumbai. |
| Time zone | Mauritius is 1 hour 30 minutes behind India (UTC+4) |
| Currency | Mauritian Rupee (MUR) · cards widely accepted · carry some USD or EUR |
| Language | English and French are both official · Creole is the everyday language |
| Airport | Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International (MRU), south-east, near Mahébourg |
Roughly two-thirds of Mauritius’s population is of Indian descent. Hindi and Bhojpuri are widely understood, Hindu temples are everywhere, Diwali and Maha Shivaratri are public holidays, and vegetarian food is genuinely easy to find. For a family taking its first long-haul trip, that removes most of the anxiety of going somewhere unfamiliar.
Timing
Mauritius sits in the southern hemisphere, so its seasons are the reverse of ours. It is warm all year — but there is a clear difference between the best months and the ones we steer clients away from.
| Jan – February | Hot, humid, heaviest rainfall, peak cyclone season | Avoid |
| March – April | Warm and humid, rainfall easing through April | Acceptable |
| May – June | Humidity lifts, clear skies, 23–27°C, few crowds | Best value |
| July – August | Coolest, 23–24°C, trade winds strongest | Good |
| Sept – October | Winds ease, warming up, October is the driest month | Best overall |
| Nov – December | Warm, increasingly humid, December busiest | Good early |
Dry, warm, calm seas, and the trade winds that make July and August breezy have settled down. If you can travel then, do.
Almost as good weather-wise, noticeably fewer people, better rates. Our most-recommended window for couples not tied to school holidays.
This is cyclone season, and we say this even though it costs us bookings. Rainfall in those months runs well over 200 mm, and a cyclone warning can shut down excursions and boat transfers for days. No amount of discounting makes that a good holiday.
Lovely months — but the south-east trade winds are at their strongest. Fine if you stay somewhere sheltered, a problem if you don’t. Which brings us to the most important decision of the whole trip.
The big decision
Mauritius is small — you can drive across it in under two hours — but the coasts are genuinely different, and picking the wrong one is the most common planning mistake we see.
The prevailing wind comes from the south-east. That single fact determines which beaches are calm, which are breezy, and which months suit which coast.
The west sits in the wind shadow of the central mountains — sheltered lagoons all year. The east catches the breeze, welcome in summer, chilly from May to October.
Diagram is a simplified guide to the four coastal regions, not a geographic map.The liveliest part of the island. Restaurants, bars, boutiques, boat operators and the busiest nightlife in Mauritius. Best for first-timers, groups of friends, and anyone who doesn’t want to be resort-bound.
The calmest water on the island, and the best sunsets. The west sits in the wind shadow of the central mountains — sheltered lagoons when the east is choppy. Best for families with young children, nervous swimmers, and anyone travelling May to October.
The postcard coast. Long stretches of powder-white sand, a wide emerald lagoon, and the island’s highest concentration of luxury resorts and golf courses. Best for honeymooners, couples and golfers.
The wild one. Cliffs, waterfalls, forest and far less development than anywhere else. Best for nature lovers, repeat visitors, divers and snorkellers.
Three nights on the east or north and three on the west gives you two very different holidays, and the drive between them is under two hours.
Decide in ten seconds
| Travelling with children under 10 — calm, shallow water settles it | West |
| Honeymoon, travelling November to April | East |
| Honeymoon, travelling May to October | West |
| First visit — want variety and life around you | North |
| Travelling in July or August — do not book the east | West |
| Been before, want something different | South |
| Group of friends — restaurants, bars, boat trips | North |

Not to be missed
For many of our clients this becomes the most memorable part of the trip.
Ganga Talao is a crater lake about 550 metres above sea level in the mountainous south-west. Hindu tradition holds that its water is connected to the Ganga, and it is the most important Hindu pilgrimage site outside India — during Maha Shivaratri, thousands of pilgrims walk here on foot from across the island.
Standing at the entrance is the Mangal Mahadev, a 33-metre (108 ft) statue of Lord Shiva — the tallest statue in Mauritius, completed in 2007.

Before you go
Air Mauritius operates the direct Delhi service, around 7h 45m. Frequency is limited, so many itineraries route via Mumbai or Dubai. Plan flights before hotels, not after.
Taxis are easy but add up. For stays of five nights or more, a self-drive car is usually cheaper and opens up the island. Mauritius drives on the left, like India.
Complete the Mauritius All-in-One Travel Digital Form, ideally within 72 hours before departure. A few minutes online — and the detail people most often miss.
Reef-safe sunscreen, water shoes for rocky entries, a light jacket for July–August evenings and the cooler central plateau, and modest clothing for temple visits.
